The Flint Hills Discovery Center has installed Vigilance, a large-scale limestone sculpture by Kansas artist Alan Tollakson, at the Center’s main entrance. Depicting a life-size bison cow standing protectively over her newborn calf, the piece symbolizes the strength of the prairie ecosystem and the importance of environmental stewardship. Carved from native Flint Hills limestone, Vigilance reflects the bison’s role as an iconic species of the tallgrass prairie and the responsibility to preserve the region’s natural and cultural resources. Selected for its artistic excellence, durability, symbolism, and educational value, the sculpture enhances Manhattan’s public art landscape while supporting the Discovery Center’s mission to inspire appreciation and stewardship of the Flint Hills.
